Improper storage is one of the biggest causes of scope damage.  All scopes should be hung in a cabinet that is long enough to prevent the distal end from touching the bottom.  The distal end should also be secured so that it does not bounce when the cabinet is opened or when other scopes are transported into or out of the cabinet.
